Michel Marié, research director at the CNRS, could have been a ruralist as far as he has analyzed what the countryside means for people born there like himself. Nonetheless what he has found there was much urban and therefore he finally became an eminent urbanist. His work interrogates the land and the various land dimensions. Our identity is such stuffed as an imaginary land we are made, a land being told and felt, a land rounded with our myths. Grid and streams organize a structured land, perhaps far away from any myth. Is this still the same land? What kind of land we come from, is it the one we almost try to look like, is it the one we choose or a land telling about ourselves. And the element that builds the land is the element that built the life, the water. Michel Marié wrote many articles about that singular element and the way human beings try to control it. From a language to another, finding an identical meaning. Walking through the line between Polish and French, finding words to say it, words picturing in a language in an other way than in an other, walking through the metaphoric line of a language and translating without betraying a language’s singular spirit and poetry. Translating for example Zbigniew Herbert’s poems, talking with his verses and making these sound in a French way. The distant sound of a voice awakes beyond the silence of its language and search for its own echo hidden in another language, talks suddenly with other words, almost the same but nonetheless already different, as if a perfume would have vanished to let an other one become evident.
