Domain name
Adomain name, for example percept-studio.com, is an address to be written in the navigation browser bar (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari) to get on a website.
The domain name comes after the three ‘w’ meaning World Wide Web : www.percept-studio.com is the Percept-studio website complete address.
A domain name can have different extensions depending on the destination of the site:
.com / .biz – for commercial website, .eu – for European website, .net – for a website without any other specificity except being, as any other website, on the net, .org – for a website of an organization, .edu - for a website with educative purpose, .travel – for a website concerning travels, and so on.
There are also extensions of national domain names as .fr for France, .es for Spain, .it for Italy, and so on.
We distinguish global/international domains and local ones (corresponding to a region, an activity, and so on). These domains are Top Level Domains (TLD).
A website may contain several sub domains, in other words Second Level Domains (SLD). Some extensions, more complex as .co.uk, can’t be registered as TLD. SLD aren’t necessary and are just used to indicate more information about a TLD.
To each domain name are linked server names (two at least) hosting the domain. The Webmaster actualizes it to coordinate the site address with the server and therefore to maintain the hosting.
Before online setting, we rent a domain name for one year or more (ten years maximum). Rent for the first year is not expensive. The expiration date mustn’t be over lapsed (price for renewal are higher).
